History

Madeline a.k.a. Madam Psyche grew up as a troubled teen. Her unique abilities did not manifest until she was thirteen. During her first experience being a telepath, she could hear everyone’s thoughts within a couple of miles from her. She received an excruciating headache the first time it happened – screaming in agony. Her mother took her to the closest hospital they could find. The doctor was able to find what he thought at first was a tumor pushing on numerous cranial nerves. However, after years of continuous checkups by various doctors, the so called tumor never grew or became a further issue.

Soon, Madeline was not only able to read others’ thoughts, but move things with her mind as well. She was terrified and at first kept a lot of it from her mother. But one day, she could no longer keep her abilities in and worked up the courage to tell her. She thought her mom was going to freak, but to her surprise, she cried. A flood of images entered Madeline’s mind as she saw her mom’s memory of her father on his deathbed. At that moment, she was thinking her husband had brain cancer and looked back on it with great remorse because all she could think about was how difficult it would be to take care of him. He stared back at her in shock and suffered a stroke that day. Her mother was confused at first, but new information came to light.

What doctors thought was cancer, wasn’t at all. His pineal gland, the same gland scientists theorize is the seed to human evolution, enlarged – causing him to exhibit strange behaviors whenever people were around him, as if he could hear what they were thinking. It was at this moment, once Madeline opened up about her abilities, her mother understood that her husband most likely died all those years ago because of the ill thoughts she was thinking as he inadvertently read her mind.

The guilt weighed on her mother heavily and she did everything in her power to ensure her daughter, Madeline, could grow up with the confidence of seeing her abilities as a blessing and not as a curse – though Madeline thought the contrary.

When she was 18, her and her mother got into a heated argument for her not to waste her life away, feeling sorry for herself. She started hanging with the wrong crowd and involved with drugs responsible for suppressing the mind’s mental activities. She was constantly looking for an escape, not wanting the powers destiny bestowed upon her. The argument got so intense, it manifested her third power. Unknowingly, she projected her intense thoughts in her mother’s mind (overloading it so to speak), causing her mind to break down.

After this unfortunate event, she dedicated her life to honor her mom’s faith in her. At first she simply helped people with their problems and found out she wanted to do more. Her alter-ego Madam Psyche allowed her to do just that as she became a vigilante predicting crime organizations’ movements before they had a chance to execute heinous activities.

Later on as an older woman retiring as a psychologist, a special girl named Sabina was put under her as numerous therapists tried and failed to communicate with her. Madeline was considered the best in her field because she had a knack for seeing through people. Little did they know, she was not only good at reading behaviors but minds as well. Out of all the patients she has had, Sabina was the most interesting due to her clairvoyant abilities. In her latent years, she now dedicates her life to encouraging Sabina to control her abilities with patience and visiting her unfortunate brain-dead mother at a psychiatric hospital. Ironically, she aspires to be to Sabina what her mother tried to be to her when she was younger ,and her mother suffers what she feared her husband would become to her.

II. Personality

In her teens, Madeline was mad at the world for causing her to have such extraordinary capabilities. All she wanted was to be normal. She never thought her mother understood her.

Madeline became very rebellious and spaced out due to her involvement with a crowd who could give her the drugs she wanted to suppress the thoughts she heard every day. After the incident with her mother, she did a lot of soul searching. Through patience, she was able to control the thoughts she heard and eventually learned to shut her mind off from hearing them if she wanted to. Her mother, who would forever be at a catatonic state, acted as a constant reminder for her of what would happen if she did not take full responsibility and control of her life.

Her newfound wisdom made her very patient and approachable in her later years. So much so that the mute Sabina actually opened up to her, forming a bond. She is now a kind older woman who does her best to understand people and the world around her.

III. Abilities, Powers, Skills…

Madeline is able to read the thoughts of others within a certain radius of her. She practiced this ability to the point where she mastered it with perfection and can access corridors within the mind not even the person knew they had.

Through concentration, she can lift objects or beings by just thinking about it. The heavier the object, the more strain it puts on her brain. Due to this strain, she has limits to what she can actually lift.

An ability later referred to as “overload” allows her to plant a sort of mental bomb causing the victim to be catatonic or even die. Because of the severity of this power, she only uses it as a last resort.

IV. Allies/ Enemies

She has allied herself with various heroes/ vigilantes while taking down crime lords. Later on, she even helps Sabina become more accustomed to taking her powers on the field and assists her in her first heroic act.

Anyone causing harm to communities on the streets. Mostly various crime organizations.

V. Trivia

Madeline wears her mother’s wedding ring as a necklace to remind her of her father, since she barely knew him growing up. Her mother said he did everything in his power to fight for the safety of his family and went through a lot of hardship. Madeline’s mother used to be quite religious. Her mother and her father had her before marriage. Her father sacrificed a lot to be able to buy the ring and marry his mother properly as he said, “This ring now says we’re family”.

Sabina got the idea to carry a necklace as well to symbolize her family.

VI. Creation and Development

Writer Reginald A. created Madeline “Madam Psyche” to be a positive support system to Sabina. Since Madeline also manifested troubled powers, which complicated her life, she is one of the few people who would be able to comprehend what Sabina is going through.

Madeline’s demeanor when she is older is very reminiscent of Charles Xavier from the comic X-Men. The idea is for her to be a guide bringing out the best of a person and latent potential one didn’t know existed.
