I. History
Mantle is a descendant of a lost race known as the Terraforma. These beings were once thought to be a fable forgotten in the annals of history. Legend states they were once servants of a Primordial being who watched over the planet. They used to take a more active role in protecting society. The very first generation of their people took an oath to protect all forms of creation. Rumor has it that they were on earth even before humans. At first, they helped man live until the hearts of the people they were helping turned to greed. Once divided tribes of the humans united against them. Humans didn’t understand why they had to answer nor share their land with a species who weren’t one of them.
Terraforma had power, but humans had the numbers. Though, Terraforma can seemingly become one with earth, they reproduce and age like humans. Their anatomies are near identical apart from blood type and their natural outward earthy appearance. However, unlike humans, reproduction only came out of necessity when their population became few and it was not an act of mutual affection nor pleasure. Because of this, their numbers already dwindled below the abundant population of the humans. Their near God-like abilities to control Earth still gave them the upper hand in a fight. Even small armies struggled against the might of one. However, weapons began to develop more and through guerilla tactics, humans were able to somewhat match their opposition.
The war between the two lasted for centuries. Future generations of humans taught their descendants that Terraforma were unnatural monsters who had no right to be on their land. This lie was told so that boys who became men would have an easier time killing them when becoming old enough to fight and women would have no sympathy for their demise. This horrific act of discrimination made Terraforma weary of humans; hating them as well. Their sacred duty to protect, which took precedence over everything they valued, became a lost cause as they focused their efforts on eliminating humans who they believed polluted the planet. Their war raged on until both sides had enough. The leaders of the first generation who became the first council of the Terraforma and the anointed kings of humans who each ruled over their own land made a truce. The Terraforma agreed to only intervene when deemed necessary among its people to prevent humans from potentially destroying Mother Earth. The humans agreed not to treat Terraforma as monsters. In fact, they decided to erase their existence completely by not including them in history, so neither side would know of the bloodshed.
Decades later, after much deliberation among the council and its people, they reclaimed the sole purpose of their race. As guardians of Earth, Terraforma took responsibility of saving it only in times of calamity to avoid their existence from humans. Due to the human race’s potential for darkness, the elders did not want their people to intermingle with such a species any longer. Mantle only knows of the present generation of humans. He cannot understand the ways of old. He believes the best way to stop calamity is to work with the humans and be active in preventing imminent danger rather than waiting for inevitable destruction.
II. Personality
Because of his somewhat sheltered existence from humans, his interactions can be awkward at best. His wisdom is beyond its years, but due to his fascination with modern day humans, he has the tendency to act like a young adult at times. He is into pop culture and dresses the part. He fashions a muscle-bound shirt with lightweight cargo pants. This attire allows him to be more comfortable when he fights. He always tells the truth as he was taught lying was a sin, which can get him in trouble in tense situations. However, anything related to his identity, he lies and tells half-truths. He realizes lying about his form protects people from who he really is. Being the contemplative person, he wonders if forms of darkness such as lies need to be used sometimes for the greater good.
Mantle uses elements from earth to disguise himself as a human while seeking out threats which can be a danger to life. He has the physical strength of nature itself. Water is the only sustenance he needs but eats other foods humans consume as well. As he utilizes more of his power, his body naturally takes on more of an earthy appearance. Because of this, he only fights stronger enemies at night or in dark places to conceal his true form. During his nightly escapades, he wears a dark trench coat with a hood. When the full brunt of his power unleashes, crust is where his skin should be, his hair color changes from black to a dark tint green, and his eyes glow yellow.
Everything about his outward appearance, during the day, is identical to a human’s. He has a dark complexion to hide any small earthly details he might have missed on his skin when disguising himself. His hair is black and eyes light brown.
III. Abilities, Powers, Skills…
Mantle has super strength.
He can take a large amount of damage.
Uses earth as both an armor and a weapon. He carries a one strap knapsack over his shoulder that looks ordinary at first glance, but inside holds dirt. It takes him a few moments to grind materials from the ground, which is why he has some on hand just in case he needs to react quickly.
Though a powerhouse, there is a limit to his strength. The more power he uses, the more time they take to recover before his next attack.
To hide this weakness, the Terraforma have studied ancient forms of martial arts performed by humans to use during these periods of power recovery; allowing them to also mix hand-to-hand offensive maneuvers with their natural combat prowess.
IV. Allies/ Enemies
Mantle’s allies are The Guardians, “The Protector”, “Forest Werewolf”,and a botanist named Anisa. He establishes a group with “The Protector” and “Forest Werewolf” known as “Earth’s Trinity” in response to a cataclysmic event caused by Toxin and Nervo.
Toxinis nearly the exact opposite of Mantle. Where Mantle hides his identity and requires no recognition for his deeds, Toxin is a narcissist who wants the whole world to see the havoc she wreaks. Her DNA is no longer human due to an incident she perpetrated. She can exhale deadly poisons from her lungs that can cause Mantle’s skin to rot. She can also control the radius of toxins exuding from her body that destroys all plant life around her and causes human to fall ill. She can suck water from people’s bodies including Mantle’s to heal herself. Because of her terrifying abilities, people also call her Death. Due to her rough childhood, she is proficient in hand-to-hand combat and a near master at executing her crimes thanks to her life’s worth of criminal affiliations.
Anything threatening life is also Mantle’s enemy.
Fire weakens him.
V. Creation and Development
Mantle is a hero from Tatum Games created by Reginald Andah. Inspiration of his abilities come from anime media such as Naruto’s Gaara and comic book personalities such as DC’sTerra.
His origin story was inspired by Martian Manhunter. Mantle’s character explores the realm of possibility the impact another intellectual species would have on the human race.
VI. Trivia
Mantle fancies a botanist, Anisa, who cares about all life on the planet as much as he does. They met after he saved her from an unknown thief at the facility she worked at. The thief stole a plant with the unique property to change a subject’s DNA and give him or her meta-like abilities. This thief would later be known as Mantle’s greatest enemy, Toxin. Ironically, this incident led the facility to believe they needed to increase their security and offered Mantle a job, which he accepted to develop an alter-ego; keeping up appearances. The human name he came up with was Mark Twigg. Due to his greatest secret he can never uncover to the world, he is perplexed on what to do with his affections for Anisa and feels alone. Back home, Terraforma acts like a family when it comes to protecting but is cold when it comes to relationships. Being guardians is all they know.
His father and mother were respected elders. Before he left, they also could not understand their son’s decision to potentially bring about a new era of unity between Terraforma and humans. For a mysterious reason, Mantle possesses feelings not known to his people when it comes to love. It resembles more of a human. He is perplexed of why he is so different until he gets a letter from his mother after her passing years later after his departure. She explained how she was actually a human disguised as a Terraforma. Hiding her true feelings towards the way she felt about her own species took a toll on her mental health for quite some time. She felt out of place and alone like Mantle does. Mantle’s father kept her from losing her identity. Most of the elders knew of her presence but did not act on it because of the curious love she displayed for one of their own. She gave them hope that one day their people could unite with humans again. Mantle feels guilty leaving since she died almost instantly after his departure. He didn’t get the news until years later from his father. He did not want his son to feel responsible for her passing. His father can’t explain it, but he feels his son is on a destined path he must not interfere with and hopes he can be the light to unite the sides again.
Specializes in detecting anomalies in Earth’s atmosphere or seismic activities while associated in team known as Earth’s Trinity consisting of himself, “The Protector”and “Forest Werewolf”.
