I.History
Sabina was raised in Saudi Arabia but hidden are the details of Sabina’s birth. It is known that she is the last of a line of Saudi prophets who possessed the ability to see into the future. Her birth records were forged and she has no memories of life before she was age seven.
Having lost both of her biological parents to what she was told was a ‘world-threatening crisis’ when she was young, Sabina never received proper training on her powers and as such struggles both physically and emotionally to use them proficiently. However, she has more latent power and talent at using her abilities than any of her predecessors and is able to see and manipulate the individual timelines of every single object and living thing on Earth. After an incident that remains a personal trauma to Sabina, she refuses to tamper with the timelines of living things past a week from the present.
For Sabina, growing up as a child was very challenging. She was always laughed at and mocked for being clumsy and a space case. Outside of her quirkiness, at puberty she discovered another reason why she was different from her fellow classmates. Sabina’s first premonition came during class. While giving a presentation, she suddenly envisioned parts of an attack nearby that was going to spill over into the school. She played it off as a weird daydream, but when she was almost done with her presentation, she heard a high pitched screech. It was the same distinct sound she had heard in her dream. Before she could even question what happened, she dropped to the floor yelling at the class to do the same. An explosion erupted, hurting many people. But no one died because of her warning.
Sabina at first started training her abilities by predicting sport games victories and lottery wins. She later began to hone in on people’s lives, and what was in their futures. However, due to the spontaneity of when her clairvoyance abilities occured, life was proven to be quite difficult for her.
As Sabina grew older, she found herself always on the run from people who wished to use her abilities for personal gain. Her biggest frustration was that she would sometimes make things worse when she tried to intervene and help.
Sabina became motivated to fight for the sake of world peace when she received a vision of another world-threatening catastrophe that only she had the capability to stop, although in the back of her head she harbors a fear that what she saw may signify that she is the catalyst for the disaster.
II. Personality
Sabina is a kind, hardworking woman but suffers from insecurity as a result of her past mistakes and outbreaks of her power.
As a child, Sabina appeared to be slow and aloof as she was bombarded by visions that sprung into her head unbidden, making it very hard for her to stay in the present. As such she was bullied by other children. As she started developing her powers of vision, unscrupulous people who desired to use her divination power for their own gain started appearing. Due to her experiences, she has an inferiority complex and is very wary of strangers, having very few people she can call friends.
She is extremely fond of her hero name, ‘Aziza’, as it is a pet name her parents call her by. The word provides her with confidence and peace of mind, and Sabina feels that when she is acting as the heroine Aziza, she is capable of far greater than she would be as herself.
III. Abilities, Powers, Skills…
Visions are triggered if needed, but they come randomly and uncontrollably to her for the most part. She cannot see into the future of other people without touching them first.
Sabina possesses the ability to visualize the timeline of an object and manipulate it.
However, this places strain on her mind and she has yet to master the ability.
She is able to omit moments in time of an individual or object. This ability allows her to accomplish feats such as delaying the fall of a single building or reversing someone else’s time, preventing them from making a mistake.
She can also stop general time for a very brief period although she has little to no control over it. It usually stems from intense experiences she wishes to stop.
IV. Allies/ Enemies
Sabina gets the attention of a therapist named Madeline. Other psychiatrists diagnosed Sabina with a variety of mental disorders because of her inability to focus as a child. Due to her uncontrollable premonitions, she has been diagnosed with various disorders ranging from ADHD to intellectual disabilities. This caused her to be mute whenever she spoke to any type of psychologist as they immediately categorized her to be some type of mental patient. Madeline’s own troubled past caused Sabina to open up. As they became closer, Madeline revealed herself to be Madam Psyche, an old, retired low profile hero with telepathic powers who went on the path of vigilante after her mother’s passing.
Sabina believes herself to be a threat. Without full control of her powers, she at times worries she will be the catalyst of humanity’s greatest threat rather than its savior. She stays positive and strives every day to take control of her abilities.
V. Creation and Development
The expansion of Sabina developed by writers Lauren S., Chris Z., and Reginald A. delved into the issues of a person being born into this world completely different from other people. Her abilities create a paradox in her life where she has the talent and power to be a heroine and yet does not feel like one herself. People have the tendency to shun the potential of what they do not understand, even within themselves. The aforementioned writers explore this idea of how such a person may develop through such struggles of constant judgement weighing down on them, since the clash between Sabina’s abilities and personality make her vastly different heroine from others.
The writer Chris Z. drew influences on Sabina’s character and her powers from the Japanese manga/ anime called D. Gray-man and the videogame Blinx 2.
Writer Lauren S. was inspired by the video game Life is Strange, drawing on some of the time powers and manipulation presented within the game to develop Sabina’s character and abilities. This includes being able to omit moments within a timeline.
Reginald A. drew from real world concepts a person growing up with extraordinary abilities might face. The psychological tolls and difficult relationships one would go through are similar to franchises such as Heroes or comic book characters like X-Men.
Sabina’s Arabian culture also brings in new elements to comic book character type lore rarely explored before. Her diversity sheds more light on what an individual must go through at times just to be considered normal based on society’s standards. Adversity strengthens her character, allowing her to connect to what teens and young adults face transitioning into the world to mature in this present day.
VI. Trivia
Sabina can actually experience visions as if she was there in the moment and not just see them. She hardly confides in anyone about this as to not burden them with her pain. Her kind heart causes her to keep a lot to herself, even from the very few close people she has.
When she was young, she confused her visions with present time. If she got a glimpse into the future, her intense, realistic experience would make her think it was happening in the present until she was shot back to the actual moment in time. It was later on referred to as time displacement. Breathing techniques help her transition between them, distinguishing what is present time and what is a vision of the future.
Sabina carries a necklace with the portrait of her mother and father, which also doubles as an audio player carrying a sound clip of her mother calling her Aziza, which in her tongue means ‘precious one’.
