For the final exam in Allan Chavkin’s critical theory course, students were required not only to compare Junichiro Tanizaki’s “The Key” to Louise Erdrich’s “Shadow Tag”, but explain certain instances where Erdrich’s scenes in her story were similar to Tanizaki’s. Since Louise Erdrich’s story was inspired by Junichiro Tanizaki’s, I was required to search through both books and re-read passages Erdrich took from “The Key” and made her own in “Shadow Tag” as well as explain in a critical thinking essay both the similarities and differences.
